The word swayambodh comes from two ideas: swayam, meaning self, and bodh, meaning awareness or awakening. When we chose it as our name, we were not thinking about branding. We were thinking about a girl named Sunita who dropped out of school in Class 8 because her family could not spare her from housework, and who told us, years later, that no one had ever asked her what she wanted to become.
That conversation stayed with a small group of us. We were teachers, an accountant, a nurse, and two recent graduates who had spent weekends running informal tuition classes in a rented room. We kept meeting the same wall: goodwill without structure runs out of energy. Families needed consistency. Children needed more than a few enthusiastic weekends.
From weekends to a foundation
In early 2026 we decided to stop improvising. If we wanted our work to outlast any one volunteer's free time, it needed a home. On 21 July 2026, Swayambodh Social Foundation was formally incorporated as a non-profit company, registered with the Registrar of Companies in Pune.
Registration did not change our values, but it changed what we could promise. We could now build programs that a family could count on for years, not weeks. We could be transparent about every rupee. And we could invite partners to build alongside us.
We are not here to give charity. We are here to help people recognise what they are already capable of.
